As of September 21, 2026, there have been 4 reported rapes and one breaking and entering and sexual assault on campus at CSUSM, all in the span of under two weeks. I, along with my fellow female students, am highly concerned about this increase in sexual violence on campus, especially in spaces that are so public.

Many of us have reached out to the Associate Vice President for Campus Security regarding this issue and have received no response. The Office of Student Affairs plans to host an educational seminar about preventing sexual violence and encourages students to create safety together. CSUSM students have not received any communication from the university about increasing campus security to prevent sexual violence and keep students safe.

We should not carry the full responsibility for taking extra careful precautions because of the disgusting actions of other students. As women, we have the right to a safe education just as much as the rest of the student body. CSUSM continues to propose reactive solutions to an active problem. The best way to ensure student safety on campus is by taking accountability and actively preventing crime by increasing security presence on campus. These violent acts would not be able to happen in public if a security guard was present.

This petition is requesting that CSUSM provide more campus security in parking lots, the quad, and other poorly-lit areas on campus. There should also be complete transparency regarding the actions CSUSM will take to actively address this issue.
