The Issue

As a concerned parent and advocate for the well-being of students at Saraland Elementary, I am reaching out to urge the school administration to provide daily recess for our children, instead of the current schedule of just two days a week. Scientific research strongly supports the importance of daily recess for students, highlighting significant benefits in both academic performance and behavioral development.

Recess is not merely a break from academics; it is an essential aspect of a child's day. Numerous studies have shown that students who participate in regular physical activity and have time to socialize with peers during recess are more attentive in class, show improved cognitive functioning, and exhibit fewer behavioral problems. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), physical activity can have both immediate and long-term health benefits—ensuring students are ready to learn and succeed.

By only allowing recess twice a week, we are depriving our children of these critical benefits. Children need time to recharge, alleviate stress, and engage in creative play, which is vital for their mental health and overall well-being. Additionally, moving and playing outdoors helps develop social skills and encourages a sense of community and cooperation among students.

Saraland Elementary has always been committed to providing a nurturing and effective learning environment. Increasing the frequency of recess to daily can further this mission by supporting our children's holistic development. Practical adjustments can be made without compromising academic time, such as reorganizing the daily schedule to incorporate at least 20 minutes of recess every day.

Let’s prioritize the health and education of our children by ensuring they get the necessary time for physical activity, social interaction, and mental rest. Please join me in advocating for daily recess at Saraland Elementary. By signing this petition, we're taking a crucial step towards fostering a better future for our kids. Encourage the school administration to recognize the essential role of recess in a child’s education and well-being. Sign this petition to make a meaningful difference in our children's daily lives.
