Increase PTO Funds Collected by Class Room Parents

Increase PTO Funds Collected by Class Room Parents
The Issue
Room Parent Volunteers play a vital role within the Friendswood ISD school system and oftentimes do way more than just plan parties. In addition to planning three parties at the busiest times of year for any parent, a Room Parent's job is to collect funds and track their spending, be the liaison between the teacher (and PTO) and the parents, collect, purchase, and/or assemble gifts for the teacher three times a year, and attend field day and field trips (or tasked with finding volunteers for these events).
But time is only a small part of the responsibilities for these parents. A Room Parent is limited on the monetary amount they can request from the other parents in their class. The current amount, set by FISD, is $17. A parent is allowed to send less (or none), but not allowed to send more. As inflation has continued to go up, this has put an increasing strain on Room Parents, as they end up funding an overwhelmingly large portion of the parties out of their own pockets. Additionally, the $17 limit is not adjusted if there is an extra teacher in the classroom.
The amount Room Parents are allowed to ask for has not increased in several years. We are requesting that FISD increase this amount from $17 to $20 for the 2024-2025 school year. Raising the amount we are allowed to ask for will lessen the financial burden on the volunteers and also make it easier to collect, especially for those who prefer to pay in cash.
