Increase Minimum Wage to a Livable Standard in NM

The Issue

The current minimum wage in Sandia Park, New Mexico is not sufficient for individuals and families to maintain a decent standard of living. Many people are struggling to afford basic necessities such as housing, food, healthcare and education. According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Living Wage Calculator, the living wage for a single adult in Bernalillo County (where Sandia Park is located) is $20.10 per hour - significantly higher than the state's current minimum wage of $12 per hour ($7.25 federal minimum wage) (MIT Living Wage Calculator) and this is only accounting for one adult living alone with no children. . This discrepancy leaves many hardworking citizens unable to meet their basic needs without additional assistance.

Being a student in high school I am starting to realize the importance of makin money to start saving for college or getting a car, knowing that minimum wage is only $12 per hour is not a very comforting thought because I know that that is not enough to live off of.

We urge our state government representatives to take immediate action on this issue by raising the minimum wage to a livable standard. This will not only improve the quality of life for many residents but also stimulate local economy through increased consumer spending.
