Increase Maharashtra MBBS internship stipend
The Issue
Every day, MBBS interns across Maharashtra shoulder immense responsibility. We serve as first responders, monitor critically ill patients, assist in life-saving procedures, and keep hospitals running—yet our work is undervalued.
Interns often work up to 150 hours a week, far beyond safe limits. According to general labour standards and international medical training norms, a safe working limit is typically around 48–80 hours per week, with mandatory rest periods to prevent fatigue-related errors. However, in reality, interns frequently work continuous shifts exceeding 24–36 hours without adequate rest, food breaks, or basic facilities like beds, clean washrooms, or safe accommodation. We are expected to make critical decisions despite exhaustion, risking both our well-being and patient safety.
For this, we receive just ₹17,000 per month.
This amount is not only inadequate, it is disrespectful. It fails to reflect our responsibilities, risks, years of education, or rising living costs. The National Medical Commission (NMC) mandates that interns must be paid a stipend, yet it does not enforce a uniform minimum across states, leading to wide disparities. In several other Indian states, MBBS interns receive significantly higher stipends often ranging between ₹20,000 to ₹30,000 or more, highlighting the inequity faced by interns in Maharashtra. As expenses for housing, food, and transportation continue to rise, our stipend has not kept pace.
We are not asking for luxury, we are asking for dignity.
We demand that the Government of Maharashtra revise the MBBS internship stipend to at least ₹25,000 per month, which is the minimum needed to align with current living costs and bring parity with other states.
It is time for Maharashtra to act.
Sign this petition to demand a stipend of at least ₹25,000 per month and dignified working conditions for every MBBS intern in Maharashtra. Our work saves lives, it deserves respect.
