Increase Legal Pet Allowance by ONE

The Issue

Animals dying in shelters due to overcrowding happens every day. Healthy, happy animals that would make wonderful companions lose their lives merely because there is no room left in these shelters. By simply increasing the legal number of pets allowed in apartments and homes by just one, we can make a monumental impact on reducing the number of animals euthanized each year.

Each year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide, according to the ASPCA. Of these, about 1.5 million are euthanized due to overcrowding, lack of space, and not being adopted in time. By allowing more animals to be adopted into loving homes, we can significantly reduce these heartbreaking statistics.

In urban and suburban areas, many local housing ordinances restrict the number of pets per household, often to two or three. While these rules are in place to ensure the quality of life for all residents, a small change could mean the difference between life and death for so many pets. Increasing the allowed number of pets by just one per home could alleviate the pressure on our overcrowded shelters.

Moreover, the companionship provided by pets is invaluable. Studies, such as those conducted by the CDC, indicate that pets can decrease blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and feelings of loneliness. Allowing more families to adopt pets not only saves animal lives but also enriches the lives of people.

By encouraging local lawmakers and housing authorities to adjust these limits, we can work together to create a future where animals are no longer needlessly put to death. In contributing to a solution that benefits both people and pets, we foster communities with more compassion and empathy.
