Chess has always been more than a game to me; it's a form of art, a mental exercise, and a passion that brings people together. Growing up in Scotland, I was enthralled by the strategic depth and intellectual challenge chess offered. Unfortunately, the support and resources available for aspiring chess players in Scotland have been woefully inadequate compared to other countries. This injustice threatens the future of chess in our region.

In recent years, countries such as Norway and Armenia have increased their investment in chess programs significantly, resulting in remarkable successes. These nations have implemented comprehensive school programs, trained educators, and financially supported chess leagues. Scotland, on the other hand, lags behind with minimal governmental or institutional support. According to a report by Scottish Sport, chess receives less than 1% of the funding allocated to other popular sports, hindering the growth and competitive prospects of our talented players.

Our young talents, some with the potential to become international grandmasters, are missing the opportunities they deserve because of this lack of funding. More importantly, the problem is not just about nurturing future champions, but about ensuring that chess is accessible to everyone, especially young players from less affluent backgrounds.

By increasing funding, we could introduce chess clubs in all schools, provide free or subsidized entry to chess tournaments for young talent, and develop robust training programs. These measures will ensure that Scottish chess players are equipped with the resources they need to compete on an international level and that every child has the opportunity to learn this incredible game.

I urge the Scottish Government and education authorities to acknowledge the cultural and developmental value of chess. Increased funding can enrich our communities, stimulate young minds, and enhance Scotland's presence on the global chess stage.
