Increase Funding for Public Transit in Pennsylvania

The Issue

As a lifelong advocate for public transit and a former resident of Philadelphia, I have personally experienced the ups and downs of Pennsylvania's public transportation system. Over the years, it is clear that the state has not adequately funded this essential service, resulting in diminished availability, infrastructure decay, and inadequate support for the millions of Pennsylvanians who rely on public transit every day.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, over 1.5 million people in the state depend on public transportation for daily commute. Despite this, funding for public transit has been consistently underfunded, leading to service reductions and higher fares which disproportionately affect lower-income individuals and families.

Pennsylvania is home to several bustling cities with growing populations, notably Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. More funding for public transit could significantly reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and improve the quality of life for countless Pennsylvanians who rely on these services for work, school, and other daily necessities.

The necessity for action becomes even more apparent when we consider the environmental implications of public transit. According to the American Public Transportation Association, public transportation in the United States reduces CO2 emissions by 37 million metric tons annually. This clearly presents the potential for a sizable environmental impact in Pennsylvania if public transit is prioritized and funded adequately.

Let's urge the state government of Pennsylvania to increase funding for essential public transportation services. Better transit is better for everyone - for the residents, the environment, and the future resilience of our communities. Your signature can bring us a step closer to this necessary change.
