Increase Funding for Child Care Spaces in Child Care Deserts
The Issue
My family is one of many in Canada trapped in what's known as a "child care desert." Here in our community, despite the groundbreaking Canada-Wide Early Learning and Child Care (CWELCC) program promising more affordable options, there’s a critical shortage of child care spaces. Like so many others, we struggle not with the cost, but with the sheer lack of available licensed spaces for our children. This situation severely restricts our ability to work, participate in community life, and quite simply, live our lives to their fullest potential.
According to a recent study by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives, nearly half of all young children live in areas with potential demand that exceeds the number of available child care spaces by 3-to-1. The COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated this crisis, with more families seeking reliable and safe child care options. We need urgent action to address this glaring gap that leaves countless families in a lurch.
Therefore, we are calling on the Government of Canada to significantly increase investment in funding dedicated to the creation and expansion of licensed child care spaces, particularly in those regions identified as "child care deserts". This should include prioritizing areas with the greatest shortages and ensuring that funding mechanisms are agile enough to support rapid expansion.
The establishment of more licensed child care centres will offer numerous benefits. Not only does it ensure that children receive quality care and early education in a safe and nurturing environment, but it also enables parents to return to work, easing household financial burdens. Moreover, accessible child care strengthens communities by creating jobs and supporting local economies.
Investing in new child care spaces is not just a matter of convenience—it's a necessity for fostering an inclusive society where all families have the opportunity to thrive. We need forward-thinking policies that recognize child care as a fundamental component of our national infrastructure.
