The issue

I’m starting this petition because i think junior workers deserve fairer pay for the work they do.

This is something a lot of young employees think about but don’t really say out loud. You show up to work, do your shifts, and complete the same basic responsibilities as everyone else, but your pay is significantly lower just because of your age.

I am 15 years old and work part-time at Woolworths, earning around $13 an hour. Despite performing mostly the same tasks as older employees, me, and many other junior workers are paid significantly less simply because of our age.

With the cost of living continuing to rise, young people are trying to save early for transport, education, housing, and everyday expenses. Yet workers under 18 often earn only a fraction of the adult wage while contributing to the same workplace, as a 15 year old, I don't even get a pay rise until the age 17.

Since I am a part-time worker, I do get paid less than if I were casual. However, I’ve spoken to casual co-workers, and many have said the extra pay isn’t really worth it because they don’t get rostered enough shifts for it to make up.

For many young workers, this job isn’t just extra money, it’s their main way of building savings, becoming independent, and covering basic costs. When pay is this low compared to adult rates, it makes those goals much harder to reach, even when the work being done is consistent and reliable.

If this petition succeeds, it may also influence other businesses that underpay junior workers to reconsider their pay structures and move towards fairer wages for young employees as well.

We call on Woolworths to review its pay structure for junior employees and work towards fairer compensation that better reflects the work being performed.

Equal effort should be valued fairly, regardless of age.
