Increase District Line service to Kensington Olympia

The Issue

Since 2011, weekday District Line services to Kensington Olympia have been severely reduced, with just six trains operating during limited hours each day. This cutback was described as temporary pending signal upgrades, yet no reinstatement occurred despite signal modernisation being completed in 2022.

The need for a full District Line service is pressing. Over 33,000 people live and work within walking distance of Kensington Olympia station, and the area is set to welcome 10 million visitors annually following the £1.3bn redevelopment of the Olympia venue, opening from late 2025. Without sufficient District Line services, visitors would have little choice but to rely on rail replacement buses, increasing local road congestion and travel times.

We propose reinstating a full weekday District Line service to Kensington Olympia, with up to 12 trains per hour during the morning peak (up from 4) and up to 10 trains per hour throughout the day and evening (when there are currently none). This can be achieved using existing infrastructure and spare capacity on the network, without major capital investment.

Restoring services will deliver significant benefits to local communities, support sustainable transport goals, improve visitor access, and help alleviate pressure on surrounding stations and roads.
