The Issue
Growing up in our vibrant community, there seems to be a significant gap in activities for teenagers aged 13-19. While our town caters greatly to young children and parents with an abundance of cafes, play areas, and toddler groups, teenagers are often left with nowhere to go and nothing to do.
As a mother and daughter duo, we've noticed an unsettling trend of seeing teens hanging around or, unfortunately, getting labeled as troublemakers. The reality, however, is that these young individuals lack affordable and engaging activities in their leisure time. A quick search online, and you'll find numerous complaints about teenagers "hanging around" or causing disruptions. But ask yourself: what alternatives do they really have?
The current options that exist are limited and often come with hefty price tags, ranging from £30 to £60. This price point is unfeasible for many low-income families who wish to keep their children engaged and occupied constructively. This lack of affordable activities isn't just a minor inconvenience—it’s a community setback.
Historically, youth clubs were the heart of local communities, providing safe, inclusive spaces for young people to learn, grow, and socialize. They equipped teenagers with valuable life skills through arts, sports, technology, and volunteer opportunities. Where have those vital community structures gone?
We need local authorities and community leaders to step up and address this critical issue. By increasing funding and resources for youth programs, or perhaps creating partnerships with local businesses and non-profit organizations, we could revitalize community centers and open avenues that cater specifically to teenagers, giving them the chance to explore their interests without breaking the bank.
Let's work towards creating a future where our teenagers feel valued and engaged in safe, constructive, and enjoyable activities. Let's bring back the vibrant youth spaces we once had, ensuring that our community remains cohesive and strong.
Please sign this petition to urge our local government and community leaders to prioritize the creation of more affordable and accessible clubs and activities for teenagers in our area. Your support can make a difference and help shape a brighter future for our youth.
