The Issue

I am a living testament to the fact that people can change. After 20 arduous years of battling drug addiction, I stand here today as proof that recovery is possible. It wasn't easy, and it took multiple attempts, multiple jail/ prison stays, but I finally overcame the chains of addiction. The numbers back it up: recovery programs are working, and they are saving lives. We need to extend this hope to others who find themselves ensnared by drugs like fentanyl.

Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid that has been causing devastation in communities across the nation. Many of those caught up in the world of fentanyl are not hardened criminals; they are addicts feeding their addiction. THEY ARE PEOPLE BORN INTO IT WITH NO KNOWLEDGE OF ANOTHER LIFE. Currently, these individuals are facing two life sentences when caught selling drugs—a punishment that does not consider the lack of full understanding.   They are feeding an addiction that has no consequences, or limits. This is a disease that only the ones who have been an addict can truly understand.

It is crucial that we examine the system that punishes rather than helps. Im not saying give them a free pass or anything like that.  I know alot of people have split votes on this because some may not understand addiction and think its just a choice. At some point in addiction it becomes not a choice. It's a must.  Many drug dealers are merely distributing to friends, never imagining the potential fatal outcome of their actions. However, the community is left to bear the burden of the costs associated with life sentences given to these individuals. Tax payers will pay more to house and feed them with no guidance and correction then they will to help rehabilitate. The resources used for incarcerating could instead be directed toward comprehensive recovery programs that can genuinely make a difference. We can still give them time in prison but not life sentences, recovery is  working.  Recovery is about breaking cycles, and it requires a community effort. We need to have support in the recovery world to make a true change.

I urge lawmakers and community leaders to reconsider the sentences imposed on those caught in addiction's grip. By investing in rehabilitation and awareness programs, we can offer a second chance to those who desperately need it. We can address the root cause of addiction and reduce the demand for harmful substances like fentanyl, consequently saving lives and rebuilding communities.

By signing this petition, you are taking a stand to reevaluate our current justice policies, push for increased awareness of drug consequences, and support recovery efforts. Together, we can make impactful changes that offer hope and healing instead of despair and perpetual punishment. Let’s fight for the addicts who cannot fight for themselves. Please sign this petition today to be a catalyst for change.
