The issue

Growing up, I faced the darkness that is suicidal thoughts and depression. It was an incredibly challenging time, and while I was fortunate enough to have some people who supported me, there were many who simply didn’t understand how to help or, unintentionally, made my situation worse. Many others are going through similar battles but lack the adequate support they so desperately need, often leading to tragic outcomes that could have otherwise been prevented.

Sometimes the people who care about us the most are the ones who hurt us without meaning to. Friends and family can be frightened, exhausted and unsure of what to do. Out of fear, they may judge, label or pull away, just when connection is needed most. Being misunderstood by the people you trust can feel like being abandoned. It isn’t because they don’t care, but because no one ever taught them how to help.

Mental health issues affect hundreds of millions of people worldwide, and yet awareness and understanding remain frustratingly low. According to the World Health Organization, around 332 million people live with depression globally, and suicide is the third leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds. These alarming statistics highlight the urgent need for increased awareness and better education on how to support those struggling with mental health issues.

Our goal with this petition is to promote comprehensive educational programs at schools, universities and workplaces that focus on mental health literacy. These programs should teach individuals how to recognise the signs of mental health struggles, provide tools to approach conversations with compassion and understanding, and offer knowledge on helping people access professional resources, without pushing them away.

Imagine a world where mental health is as openly discussed and acknowledged as physical health, where no one has to struggle in silence, and where every single one of us is equipped with the knowledge to support those in need. This is a vision we can work towards together. By improving education and awareness, we can ensure that those who are suffering know that they are not alone and that help is both available and accessible.

We call upon educational institutions, businesses and governments to prioritise mental health education. Let’s make mental health awareness a key part of our community’s fabric. Sign this petition to join a movement that could save lives and create a society where everyone is empowered to support one another through understanding and empathy.
