The Issue

Our names are Jerrica, Jernia, and Ashlee, and we're reaching out to you because we've seen firsthand the struggles of navigating pregnancy while facing addiction. We realized that while there were some resources available, there was a significant lack of supportive, evidence-based services that could effectively address the unique challenges of pregnancy combined with addiction.

Every year, thousands of pregnant women across the country are caught in the throes of addiction. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in 2019, approximately 5% of pregnant women aged 15 to 44 reported illicit drug use. The impacts are profound, not only risking the health and well-being of the developing fetus but also placing undue stress on the mothers.

Current research highlights the effectiveness of supportive interventions tailored to pregnant women struggling with addiction. These services can mitigate health risks and provide these women with the tools they need to overcome addiction for both their benefit and that of their children. Evidence-based treatments, such as Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), individual and group counselling, and home visitation programs, have been shown to improve outcomes significantly.

Despite the clear need and proven efficacy of these programs, many regions lack accessible, comprehensive services. We need proactive policy measures to increase funding, improve access to care, and establish dedicated programs for these vulnerable women. Increasing the availability of supportive and evidence-based services will not only assist these women in breaking free from the cycle of addiction but also ensure healthier starts for their newborns.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for pregnant women who need compassionate, effective care to overcome addiction. You are supporting policies that allocate necessary resources to evidence-based services tailored to these women's unique needs. Together, we can make a substantial difference in the lives of countless mothers and their children.

Please sign this petition and encourage others to join this cause. Let's work together to create a future where no pregnant woman struggles with addiction alone and where every child is given the best possible start in life.
