On this day 85 years ago, Nazi Germany issued a decree requiring Jews in the German Reich to publicly identify themselves by wearing a yellow Star of David marked “Jude” — “Jew.”
The star was not simply a piece of cloth. It was an instrument of persecution.
It made Jewish men, women, and children immediately identifiable in public, further isolating them from their neighbors and exposing them to humiliation, harassment, arrest, and violence.
By this point, years of Jew-hatred laws had already stripped Jews of fundamental rights. What followed was even more horrific: forced deportations, ghettos, concentration and extermination camps, and the systematic murder of six million Jews.
The yellow star remains one of the most recognizable symbols of what can happen when a government turns hatred into law — and when the dehumanization of an entire people is allowed to become normal.
85 years later, we remember where that road led.
