The Issue

The city of Baguio is a center for culture and tourism in the Philippines, and it takes great pride in being inclusive and welcoming. But it's critical that this inclusiveness prioritizes safe pedestrian walkways. Regrettably, the tactile pavement placed around the city to aid visually impaired pedestrians has turned into a slipping hazard, particularly during the frequent rainy seasons.

The unsatisfactory state of tactile paving in Baguio have contributed to pedestrian mishaps and injuries. These textured ground surfaces ought to be an aid, not a risk. There are reports from locals and tourists slipping and falling, which has led to worries about the safety of our city's sidewalks and for our fellow visually impaired citizens.

Falls are the second leading cause of unintentional injury deaths worldwide, according to the World Health Organization. The safety of our tactile paving is about protecting lives, not just following regulations. Since Baguio is a city renowned for its steep and frequently treacherous terrain, it must have secure and dependable routes for all of its residents, including those with impairments.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

1. Assessment and Audit - Carry out a city-wide audit of the current state of tactile paving. Determine which locations are most susceptible to accidents and give them priority for repairs or replacement.

2. Material Improvement - Improve the design of tactile paving by using non-slip materials to make it more resilient to the city's weather conditions while also providing useful directions for the visually impaired.

3. Community Engagement - Seek input and comments from local communities, especially those with impairments, on ways to improve tactile paving. This inclusive approach promotes civic participation while making sure that all needs are satisfied.

4. Regular Maintenance - Create a regular maintenance schedule to guarantee the longevity and safety of the pavement and prevent it from becoming a risk.

I don't have a visual impairment myself nor do any of my relatives. However, as a HUMSS student and a concerned citizen of Baguio, I hope for the city's consideration towards people who struggle with visual impairment. We should create an environment that they could live in comfortably despite their conditions, we should be innovative with the city planning. As members of the community, we should look out for one another and reach our hands out to people who can't look after themselves.

Thus, I urge the local administration of Baguio City, urban planners, and other pertinent bodies should give this matter their urgent attention. Implement these solutions to lessen the danger of accidents and foster a more welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for all.
