Inclusion of Cats in Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act

Inclusion of Cats in Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act
The Issue
My beloved cat recently experienced a traumatic incident involving a road traffic accident (RTA), which left him in excruciating pain with a broken spine. Witnessing his suffering and struggling to find help for him has deeply affected me. I believe it is time for a change to Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act, so that cats are included and protected under this legislation.
Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act currently focuses on accidents involving dogs, but fails to address the increasing number of RTAs involving cats. This exclusion leaves countless feline companions vulnerable and without legal recourse when they fall victim to such incidents.
It is important to recognize that cats are not only cherished pets but also valuable members of our communities. They provide companionship, improve mental health, and play an essential role in controlling rodent populations. Therefore, it is crucial that we extend legal protection to these innocent creatures who share our neighborhoods.
Supporting this petition with relevant facts and statistics will help shed light on the urgency and necessity for this change:
1. The Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) reports that approximately 230,000 cats are involved in road traffic accidents each year.
2. According to Cats Protection UK, around 45% of all reported RTAs involve cats.
3. A study published by Veterinary Record found that only 4% of injured or killed cats involved in RTAs received any form of veterinary treatment before their death or euthanasia.
By amending Section 170 to include cats within its scope, we can achieve several significant benefits:
1. Legal Protection: Including cats will ensure they receive appropriate care after an accident by holding responsible parties accountable.
2. Awareness: This change will raise public awareness about the importance of driving safely around areas where feline companions may be present.
3. Prevention: By recognizing cats as vulnerable road users, drivers will be encouraged to exercise caution and reduce their speed in areas where cats are likely to roam.
It is essential to emphasize that this petition aims to protect the welfare of cats while also promoting responsible pet ownership and road safety. By signing this petition, you are advocating for a change that will positively impact countless feline lives and prevent unnecessary suffering.
On the 13th of March 2023 new rules have been brought into place that states all cat owners have to have their cats microchipped by the 10th of June 2024. This is stated that it will be enforceable by law with fines in place. I'm aware that a petition was raised to parliament on the 9th of January 2023. It was stated in government response '' Having a law making it a requirement to report road accidents would make it difficult to enforce''. Dogs are required to wear collars with owners details. Cats are all to be microchipped! I fail to see the difference.
Let us come together and urge lawmakers to amend Section 170 of the Road Traffic Act, ensuring that our beloved feline companions receive the protection they deserve. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of countless cats and create safer communities for all animals.
Thank you for your support!
