The Issue

Everybody has a Cauda Equina! Do you know where yours is and what it does?

My name is Claire, and I am the founder of the Cauda Equina Champions Charity. I have first-hand experience with Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES), a rare yet severe spinal condition. CES can result in devastating, permanent disability if not recognized and treated in a timely manner. This issue has motivated me to advocate for the education about this critical spinal emergency.

A key step toward better public health and preventative care lies in educating our young generation about their bodies, including understanding the pivotal role of the Cauda Equina. The Cauda Equina is a bundle of spinal nerves and nerve roots, essential for the functioning of the lower limbs and the pelvic organs.

Official figures put the incidence of CES at between 1-3 per 100,000 people and it is recognised as a rare condition. At Champions Charity we believe this figure is much higher.

Delays and mis-diagnosis can lead to life-changing disabilities. It is important that every person is educated so they are empowered to advocate for themselves should they suspect they have Cauda Equina Syndrome. However, its importance is often not known to the general public, and this gap in knowledge can have serious health consequences.

By incorporating the structure, function and dysfunction of the Cauda Equina in the A-Level biology curriculum, we can significantly enhance the understanding among future generations. This education will empower individuals to seek earlier diagnosis, ultimately helping to reduce patient harm and improve outcomes for those affected by CES. Awareness leads to empowerment, responsibility, and positive health outcomes.

Cauda Equina Syndrome may be rare, but its potential impact is far too grave to be overlooked. Informing and educating young individuals, who may become future policymakers, doctors, or medical practitioners, is a vital step toward reducing the incidence of delayed diagnosis and unnecessary suffering.

Everybody needs to be aware when lower back pain can be something far more serious. Cauda Equina Syndrome is a medical emergency and the leading cause of spinal surgery compensation claims in the UK.

I urge the Department for Education and relevant educational bodies to take immediate action in revising the A-Level biology curriculum to include this crucial topic. By doing so, we can foster a generation that is well-informed and proactive in health matters, aiding in the prevention of lifelong disabilities associated with CES.

Please join me in this crucial movement to enhance educational content for the betterment of public health. Sign this petition to ensure that the topic of cauda equina is part of the education young people receive today, paving the way for a healthier and more informed tomorrow. Together, we can make a difference.
