Include Sand Volleyball Courts in the Meadowbrook Park Master Plan
The Issue
To: The Mayor, Garner Town Council, and Parks & Recreation Department
We, the undersigned residents of Garner—particularly families residing in South Garner and neighborhoods surrounding the future Meadowbrook Park—formally request the inclusion of dedicated sand volleyball courts in the park's final development plan.
The current proposed master plan for Meadowbrook Park omits volleyball facilities. However, there is a strong, established, and growing demand for accessible volleyball infrastructure within our local community. This was officially brought up during the review of the master plan at the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting on September 21st by Adarsh Yadlapalli, one of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board member.
An initial 150-foot by 100-foot area has been informally proposed, which could easily accommodates two standard sand volleyball courts without disrupting other planned recreational amenities. If this specific footprint does not work due to topographical constraints, we kindly request the planning and Parks & Recreation team to review alternative locations within the master plan to accommodate this request.
Adding volleyball courts to Meadowbrook Park provides significant Community & Wellness Value Additions:
Filling a Recreational Gap: Volleyball is a highly accessible, multi-generational sport. According to the Sports & Fitness Industry Association, participation in volleyball has surged by over 20% in recent years. This growth reflects a societal shift toward health and wellness that Garner should actively support.
Low-Maintenance, High-Yield Investment: Compared to basketball courts, tennis courts, or splash pads (which often exceed $100,000 to construct and require expensive resurfacing or chemical maintenance), sand volleyball is a highly cost-effective recreational investment. Once built, ongoing maintenance is largely limited to occasional rototilling, trash removal, and periodic net replacement, while providing high daily utility for residents.
Youth & Adult Development: Dedicated courts foster an environment for youth athletic development, adult recreational leagues, and casual family gatherings, creating a versatile hub for active lifestyles.
Furthermore, these courts present a substantial Revenue & Economic Impact Opportunity for the Town of Garner:
Direct Municipal Revenue: The town can generate consistent income through hourly court reservation fees, seasonal league registrations, and local skills clinics.
Capturing Regional Tournament Activity: Currently, local organizers are forced to host multi-division community volleyball tournaments in neighboring municipalities like Cary due to a lack of facilities. Building these courts ensures Garner captures that athletic demand directly.
Secondary Local Economic Boost: Hosting regional tournaments and weekend leagues draws players and their families who will spend money at Garner’s local restaurants, gas stations, and retail businesses, boosting our local economy.
The addition of volleyball courts is a forward-thinking investment in our community’s future. By integrating these facilities, the Town of Garner will provide a much-needed local venue that keeps our active residents engaged within our own town limits.
We respectfully urge the Town Council to request an amendment to the current proposal and approve the addition of two sand volleyball courts to the Meadowbrook Park project during the upcoming October review sessions.
