Include Queer Slurs In The MHS Handbook Language Restrictions

The Issue

The Marion School District 7th-12th grade Handbook's Language section states, in its entirety: "Cursing, racial slurs, and/or abusive language will not be tolerated at any time on campus or while attending extracurricular events or while on school transportation." This petition argues to add queer slurs to that list. There is a distinction between racial slurs and abusive language, so queer slurs should be separate from abusive language as well. The only other mention of queer slurs in the handbook is in the Bullying section, example 13: "Teasing or name-calling related to sexual characteristics or the belief or perception that an individual is not conforming to expected gender roles or conduct or is homosexual, regardless of whether the student self-identifies as homosexual or transgender (Examples: “Slut”, “You are so gay.”, “F*g”, “Queer”)" That is specified to insult others. I believe it should be labelled for general use instead. If two heterosexuals are talking about f*gs in general, that should not be okay. Under the handbook, it is completely acceptable.
