In Kenya, the Star reported (February 15, 2019) that a 47-year-old fisherman had been killed by a hippo while fishing in Lake Victoria in Suba North constituency. Richard Ouma was mauled by the wild animal at Olambwe beach on Friday morning. Ouma fell into the water after the hippo attacked and overturned the boat. That was his end.

In Tanzania the Daily News  (February 17, 2019) reported that a seven- year-old boy, Ibrahim Festo, was attacked and killed by a huge crocodile recently in Nyakabango in Muleba District, Kagera Region. This occurred when a group of about six children had gone to the lake to fetch water, but the crocodile attacked and dragged the unsuspecting boy from the shore.

In Namayingo (Uganda), many people have been killed or survived with deep injuries because of crocodiles attacks.

According to the Wildlife Conservation Society, in Uganda, crocodiles have been drawn to soak-away pits of water at drilling sites in Murchison Falls National Park – often several kilometers from River Nile. It is clear that they are moving quite large distances at night overland but the reason is still unclear.

But another explanation put forward is that, climate change has made cultivation and growing of crops difficult for most farmers who depend on agriculture. As a result, they have moved to Lake Victoria for fishing to earn a living. There used to be plenty of fish in Lake Victoria before the vagaries of weather set in. Back then crocodiles had a enough food and never hunted for human beings. People have now disturbed the ecosystem arousing crocodile wrath.

The proposed regional climate law guided by science, should therefore really address the underlying human - induced causes of climate change. Ultimately, we need both humans and crocodiles to co-exist
