Include Off-Reservation Members in Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe District 7

The Issue

I have not lived on the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe reservation due to educational and career opportunities outside its boundaries. Despite this, I remain deeply connected to my roots, owning federally recognized land and maintaining an active enrollment number. Since 1980, my enrollment has been used by the Tribe to acquire grants and financial aid from the U.S. government, meaning I have been contributing financially to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) and the Tribe every year. Additionally, being a landowner within the Tribe underscores my deep commitment and ties to my heritage.

However, as an off-reservation member, I find myself excluded from critical happenings, updates, services, and political events that affect my tribe. This lack of inclusion impacts not only me but numerous other members who reside outside the reservation boundaries in South Dakota. It's time for all registered members with active enrollment numbers to be recognized and united under a new district – District 7.

The establishment of District 7 will enable us to become an officially recognized group, fostering a more inclusive environment where off-reservation members like myself can have a say in tribal matters. This move would also ensure equitable access to selective services and involvement in discussions pertinent to the Tribe’s growth and development.

Creating District 7 is just the first step towards greater inclusion and representation. It's important for us to compile our roll call once this motion is reviewed and passed, ensuring that every voice is heard and considered.

Join me in signing this petition to urge the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe to create District 7. Let's embrace our collective desire for inclusion and ensure that all Tribe members, regardless of where they reside, are fairly represented in tribal affairs. Please sign this petition and help us make a positive change for our community.
