Include myopia lenses in children's NHS vouchers

Include myopia lenses in children's NHS vouchers
The Issue
My daughter has to wear myopia lenses, and I know firsthand the importance of these specialised lenses for children. Myopia, or short-sightedness, is an increasingly common condition among children, affecting not only their vision but also their academic performance and overall quality of life. Despite the essential nature of these lenses, their cost often poses a significant barrier to many families, potentially denying children the opportunity to see clearly and learn more effectively.
Currently, the NHS optical vouchers support families in affording glasses for their children, but they do not cover the cost of myopia control lenses specifically designed to slow down myopia progression. This exclusion creates a considerable financial burden on families who are already supporting a child's optical needs. It is crucial that we advocate for the inclusion of these lenses in NHS vouchers to ensure all children have access to the care they need without financial strain.
Including myopia lenses in NHS vouchers would align with the public health goal of addressing preventable vision impairment in children. More than 1 in 3 children in the UK are affected by myopia, and the numbers are expected to rise. By making myopia lenses more accessible, we can protect children's eye health and contribute to a future where they can perform better academically and socially.
We urge the NHS and relevant authorities to recognize the necessity of myopia control lenses and ensure they are included in the list of provisions covered by children's optical vouchers. This change would not only ease the financial burden on families but also help reduce the rising prevalence of myopia and support the well-being of children across the UK. Long term myopia management suggests a reduction in related conditions such as glaucoma and macular degeneration.
Investment now will reduce the burden on the NHS in the future.
Sign this petition to demand the inclusion of myopia lenses in NHS children's vouchers and help provide equal opportunities for all children to have healthy eyesight and a brighter future.
