Include men in global domestic-violence data collection

The Issue

Right now the World Health Organization and the United Nations do not include men in their global domestic violence studies.
More than 90 percent of countries also do not collect domestic violence data from men at all.

Male victims are missing from international reports, and their experiences are almost completely invisible.

The WHO defines intimate partner violence as:
“behaviour by an intimate partner or ex-partner that causes physical, sexual or psychological harm, including physical aggression, sexual coercion, psychological abuse and controlling behaviours.”

When men are excluded from data, their abuse is denied. Their stories are erased, and the systems meant to protect victims do not recognize them.

For years I have worked with men who were abused but never counted, never acknowledged and never believed.

This data gap shapes how men are viewed in the family unit. It influences how legislation is written and how family courts make decisions. It reinforces the belief that men cannot be victims, which contributes to higher rates of mental health struggles and suicide among men.

Including men in global domestic violence studies would create real change. Once the WHO and UN count all victims, countries will begin updating their own reporting systems. Male survivors will finally be visible in national and international data. This data will affect funding, support services and family court decisions, and it will finally create visibility for all victims.

This inclusiom would not take anything away from women. It would show the full picture so every victim can be acknowledged and protected.

I am calling on the WHO and UN to include men in all global domestic violence data collection and reporting. This single change would bring truth, fairness and equality to how the world understands domestic violence.
