Include Katy ISD in the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston

Include Katy ISD in the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston
The Issue
As a student from Katy ISD and the grand winner at this year's Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH), I urge our district to establish an official partnership with SEFH to benefit all our talented students.
Why This Matters
SEFH is a transformative opportunity for middle and high school students across Harris County and 22 surrounding counties, including Aldine ISD, Alief ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Harmony Public Schools - Houston North District, and Tomball ISD. Despite Katy ISD having eight winners this year, including myself, our district lacks official participation in this prestigious event.
My Experience
Through SEFH, I was able to showcase my engineering project that translates sign language. This platform provided me with:
- Expert feedback from qualified judges
- Monetary support for my research
- Opportunities to advance to global competitions like the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF)
However, I had to navigate this journey largely on my own. Information about SEFH was not readily available within our district, and I had to discover and pursue this opportunity independently. No student should miss out due to lack of awareness.
What We're Requesting
- Establish Katy ISD as an official participating district in SEFH
- Include Katy ISD schools in the SEFH portal and registration system
- Promote science fair opportunities throughout our schools
- Create resources and guidance for students interested in participating
- Celebrate and recognize our district's science fair achievements
How This Benefits Our Students
Official participation would democratize access to these valuable opportunities, bringing them to all interested students rather than only those who happen to discover them. These experiences develop critical thinking, research skills, and create pathways to VERY prestigious scholarships and college admissions.
My Commitment
As someone who has navigated this process and succeeded at SEFH, I am willing to help spread awareness by sharing my experience with fellow students and helping establish support systems within our district.
By signing this petition, you're supporting expanded STEM opportunities for Katy ISD students and ensuring our talented young scientists and engineers have every chance to shine on regional, national, and international stages.
