The Issue

Being a Black American, I carry the legacy of my ancestors, descendants of enslaved Africans in the United States, whose culture is rich and powerful. Our heritage is an integral part of America’s history, full of resilience, innovation, and profound contributions to the nation's development. Recognizing and celebrating this culture is essential; it's a way to honor the past and inspire future generations.

Currently, Apple and Samsung devices feature a variety of flags from around the world, allowing people to express their national pride and cultural identity. Yet, the representation of significant cultural symbols from the Black American community is notably absent. Including the Juneteenth and Black America Heritage flags in the emoji selections of these tech giants would be a meaningful acknowledgment of Black Americans' pivotal role in shaping our nation's history.

Juneteenth, marking the emancipation of enslaved Black Americans/African American, and the Black America Heritage flag, signifying pride in Black culture and history, are essential symbols of our progress and aspirations. By adding these symbols in their iOS and Android updates, Apple and Samsung can take an active role in promoting inclusivity and cultural awareness.

Implementing this change is technically feasible and would resonate deeply with millions of users who connect with these symbols. It would demonstrate a commitment from both companies to acknowledge and celebrate diversity, enriching the digital communication landscape.

Help us motivate Apple and Samsung to embrace diversity and inclusion by incorporating these important cultural symbols in their updates. Let’s bring awareness and representation where it is needed. Sign this petition to support and demand the acknowledgment Black culture deserves.
