The Issue

Canva for Education is a valuable program providing K-12 teachers with free access to premium features for creating engaging classroom content. However, the current policy excludes homeschool educators, despite their crucial role in educating millions of children across the United States.

As the homeschooling community grows, it’s essential that these dedicated educators have access to the same high-quality resources as traditional classroom teachers. Many major companies, including Target, already recognize homeschool educators as legitimate teachers. Canva’s exclusion is out of step with this trend and creates an unnecessary barrier to educational equity.

Access to Canva’s premium features would allow homeschool educators to create higher quality, more engaging educational materials. Currently, homeschoolers are restricted from using many of Canva’s best graphics and templates behind a paywall. This limitation affects the quality of materials they can produce for their students, many of whom have diverse learning needs.

We suggest Canva implement a verification process for homeschool teachers, which could include accepting one or more of the following documents:

  1. A copy of the homeschool affidavit or unsworn declaration filed with the state or local education authority.
  2. A letter from the school district confirming the family’s status as registered homeschoolers.
  3. A copy of the most recent end-of-year evaluation conducted by a certified evaluator.
  4. A homeschool ID (which would be the best option, as required documents vary by state).

By including homeschool educators, Canva would tap into a significant and expanding market, generate positive publicity, and position itself as a forward-thinking supporter of diverse educational approaches. This could lead to increased brand loyalty, valuable product feedback, and potential long-term customer acquisition as homeschool students continue to use Canva for personal or professional projects.

We call on Canva to:

  1. Recognize homeschool educators as legitimate teachers deserving of access to Canva for Education.
  2. Develop and implement a verification process for homeschool educators.
  3. Provide verified homeschool educators with the same free access to premium features that traditional K-12 teachers receive.

We aim to gather 5,000 signatures to show Canva the widespread support for this initiative. Every signature represents a voice calling for educational equity and recognition of the vital role homeschool educators play in our society.

Join us in urging Canva to make this important change. Your signature can help bring valuable resources to countless homeschool educators and students across the country.
