The Issue

Being from Kaushambi, Uttar Pradesh—the heart of the Awadh region—I have grown up immersed in the rich cultural tapestry of Awadhi. It is my mother tongue, the language that connects me to my roots, my history, and my identity. Yet, it's heartbreaking that this beautiful language, a tongue that embodies centuries of tradition, is not recognized in our Constitution alongside other Indian languages.

Awadhi is more than just a language. It is the dialect of the iconic Ramcharitmanas written by the revered Goswami Tulsidas, a text that is not only a repository of spiritual wisdom but also an unparalleled cultural treasure. Awadhi echoes through the lanes of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, spoken earnestly by crores—yet remains unacknowledged in the national roster of official languages.

The inclusion of Awadhi in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution is not just a step towards preserving a language, but a recognition of its extensive historical and cultural impact. As of now, India recognizes 22 official languages, each celebrated for its unique contribution to our composite culture. Awadhi rightfully deserves to join this list.

Recognizing Awadhi formally would provide a platform for more literary works, educational integration, and support for media in the language. It would open avenues for its speakers to nurture and grow the language with newly invigorated pride.

Join me in taking a stand for Awadhi—a language that has been a silent torchbearer of our cultural heritage. Let’s urge the decision-makers to recognize Awadhi's importance and ensure its vibrant legacy continues for generations.

Please sign this petition to include Awadhi as the 23rd official language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
