There is a growing need to expand sports participation to more young people. Right now, 6th grade students in Davidson County, NC, are not eligible to participate in middle schools sports programs. This is a crucial period in their young lives when sports can offer manifold benefits. Physical activity is proven to improve academic achievement, help manage stress, and build teamwork and leadership skills (source: CDC). Furthermore, the National Association for Sport and Physical Education asserts that school sports programs foster a sense of belonging and promote healthier lifestyle choices. Yet some 6th graders in Davidson County are currently left out but not all one school in the county is allowed to play 6th graders in all sports while others are not. Allowing these students to participate in sports can strengthen our community and improve outcomes for our youth. Sign our petition to advocate for 6th graders to be included in middle school sports.
