In support of Iranian women

In support of Iranian women
The Issue
On September 16, 2022, a young Iranian woman Mahsa Jina Amini died in a hospital in Tehran after being arrested and detained for not wearing the proper hijab. The death of the 22-year-old woman sparked a protest movement throughout Iran.
It is a broad movement that spans from villages to major cities, involving all strata of society, from the rich to the poor, and all ages, from school children to pensioners, as well as the diaspora. Iranians in the streets are demanding freedom, democracy and their human rights.
In recent weeks, the world has witnessed how the Iranian government has
attempted to silence the protests with violence. It has arrested thousands of
people and placed them in already overcrowded prisons with poor sanitary
conditions. Iranian authorities have killed several hundred protesters and
injured as many.
The authorities have severely restricted internet access to prevent video footage from reaching social media and news outlets outside the country. State television broadcasts propaganda claiming that the protests have ended, in order to prevent people from joining them. At the same time, brutal arrests, repression, and the use of lethal force continue on the streets and on university campuses and towards ethnic minorities.
We see leaders from around the world expressing concern for the courageous protesters in Iran. Rallies are being held in many countries to show support for the protests and to condemn the violence. Politicians and parliamentarians from all continents have spoken out against the brutal repression of the Iranian state.
Given this situation, we are asking:
- That the United Nations Human Rights Council urgently convenes a special session on Iran. Knowing that the Council is the most important body to deal with urgent human rights issues in the world and has a mechanism to hold special sessions.
- That in solidarity and to honor the struggle of Iranian women, the Islamic Republic of Iran be immediately excluded from the Commission on the Status of Women (ECOSOC), the world's leading intergovernmental body dedicated exclusively to the promotion of gender equality, empowerment and women's rights. A state that kills women who peacefully demonstrate in the streets of different cities of Iran to claim their rights should not be seated in this Commission.
