In a Time of Division, Let’s Choose Connection: Recognize National Language Learning Day
The Issue
We live in a world that feels more divided than ever, but the words we speak — and the languages we learn — can be bridges, not barriers.
As a language teacher and world traveler, I’ve seen firsthand how communication unites people across cultures. That’s why I’m calling for the recognition of a National Language Learning Day — a celebration of culture, connection, and understanding in a world that needs more of all three.
We’re calling on the U.S. Department of Education, state governors, and major educational organizations to officially recognize National Language Learning Day as an annual observance that celebrates the power of communication, diversity, and connection.
Language is more than vocabulary or grammar — it’s a gateway to culture, creativity, and community. It builds confidence, strengthens cognition, and reminds us that the world is bigger, brighter, and more connected than we often realize. The power of language to bridge communities, spark understanding, and inspire empathy cannot be overstated.
But right now, in a national climate where diversity, equity, and multicultural education are under attack, it’s more important than ever to stand up for inclusion. From book bans to cuts in cultural programs, we’re witnessing attempts to silence or erase the very things that make our communities vibrant and unique. Recognizing a National Language Learning Day is a positive, unifying way to push back — to reaffirm that our differences are not divisions, but strengths.
This day would serve as an annual celebration encouraging people of all ages to explore new languages and cultures. Schools, libraries, and community spaces could host events, workshops, and cultural exchanges — from language cafés and storytelling sessions to travel panels and student showcases.
According to the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, students who study languages perform better academically, grow in cultural awareness, and are more prepared for a global job market. And with over 7,000 languages spoken worldwide, each one offers a unique window into history, art, and humanity itself.
Recognizing National Language Learning Day is more than symbolic — it’s a declaration that diversity matters, that empathy is power, and that every voice and language deserves to be celebrated. It’s about opening hearts and minds, honoring every culture’s contribution, and ensuring that the next generation values inclusion not as a challenge, but as a cornerstone of who we are.
✨ Sign this petition to support the creation of National Language Learning Day — a day to honor the beauty of languages and the connections they create. Together, we can inspire curiosity, unity, and understanding in a world that needs it more than ever.
When we learn each other’s words, we start to see each other’s worlds.
