The Issue

We, the students of the Global Kids Youth Advisory Council, respectfully submit this petition to address ongoing concerns regarding the condition, safety, and cleanliness of NYC Public School restrooms.

Access to clean, functional, and safe restroom facilities is not a luxury—it is a basic necessity that directly impacts student health, dignity, and well-being. Currently, students have expressed concerns including:

  • Inconsistent cleaning and sanitation
  • Broken stall doors and locks
  • Lack of soap, paper towels, or toilet paper
  • Vandalism that creates unsafe or unsanitary conditions

These issues affect students’ ability to feel comfortable and secure during the school day.

We respectfully propose the following actions:

  • A publicly posted daily cleaning schedule
  • Weekly maintenance inspections to address repairs promptly
  • A confidential reporting system for restroom concerns
  • Increased monitoring during high-traffic periods
  • A collaborative student-led campaign promoting restroom respect and accountability

Improving restroom conditions will promote a healthier school environment, reduce vandalism, and reinforce a culture of mutual respect.

We believe that investing in safe and clean facilities reflects our school’s commitment to student dignity and academic excellence.
