Improve Wheelchair Accessibility and Implement Bike Speed Limits in Knightswood

The Issue

As a resident of Knightswood, my daily life is significantly impacted by the lack of wheelchair-friendly infrastructure and the absence of speed limits for bikes on canal pathways and pavements. My journey time can be doubled just looking for dips small enough for my wheelchair to get off without damaging it. Over the past two years, my wheelchair has broken several times due to inadequate ramps, resulting in over a year's worth of repairs.

The issue extends beyond accessibility. The absence of bike speed limits on canal pathways poses a safety risk not only to me but also to other pedestrians. I've been hit a few times by people whizzing by without any notice that they're coming, even clipping my shoulder at times.

According to World Health Organization data, around 15% of the world's population lives with some form of disability. This translates into over one billion people who could potentially face similar challenges daily if we don't improve our infrastructure (World Health Organization). Furthermore, studies show that traffic accidents involving cyclists and pedestrians often result from high speeds (Journal of Transport & Health).

Therefore, I urge our local council to take immediate action: increase wheelchair access across roads in Knightswood and implement speed limits for bikes on canal pathways and pavements(or a law in which they must slow down when approaching pedestrians and notify them that they are there ). This will not only improve mobility for disabled residents like myself but also enhance safety for all pedestrians and cyclists aswell.

Please sign this petition if you believe everyone deserves safe access to public spaces regardless their mode transportation or physical abilities.
