The Issue

Every day, I, like many others, drive the route into Gloucester and out along the A48 Westbury-on-Severn railway bridge along Jordan's Hill for my commute and for work. As a bus driver, each journey entails a mix of caution and fear. Our ability to drive safely is hindered by overgrown vegetation that obstructs our view of oncoming traffic, in particular, the larger vehicles that need to use the middle of the road to pass through the bridge. Everyday, there are at least 10 near misses due to this visibility issue combined with speeders who expect us to stop midway while they rush down towards the bridge. Unfortunately, our concerns have been repeatedly ignored by the highways authority and higher-ups.

Data from the Department of Transport indicates that poor visibility contributed to over 3,000 road accidents in the UK in 2019 (Department of Transport, 2019). With this statistic in mind, we can't afford to wait until a life is lost on this bridge before action is taken. Therefore, we are urgently calling for a reduction in vegetation and an extension of the speed limit to the top of Jordan's Hill. We believe these changes will significantly enhance visibility, reduce the frequency of near misses, and prevent a potential fatality. There are at least two accidents per month near to this bridge as some slow down and others go into the back of these motorists that slow down. Some motorists fear slowing down as the vehicle behind them are so close and will end up going into the back of them.

We need your help to ensure that our commutes and drives are safe. Please, sign this petition and join our fight for changes that could save lives.
