The Issue

Flatts Lane in Normanby has long been a terrifying road to cross safely, particularly the junction of Flatts Lane with Guildford Road and Woodlands Road. The only reliably safe spot for crossing is the zebra crossing outside Normanby Primary School, which falls short of addressing the broader community needs. This dangerous road sees an overwhelming amount of traffic, exacerbated by new housing developments that only promise more.

Local residents, including myself, have seen this danger firsthand. Recently, a child, just trying to catch their school bus, was hit by a vehicle in an unfortunate incident. But the risk isn't just limited to school children—this road serves as a vital crossing point for individuals of all ages, whether they are heading to the bus stop, visiting the public house, or simply going to call for friends. It’s only a matter of time before another tragedy strikes unless immediate action is taken. My son now goes to a school which involves getting transport from the bus stop and I have to take him each day to make sure he is safe, I shouldn't have to do this, being a parent is both stressful and anxiety filled for many, why do we need to add crossing a road which should be safe to the list of stresses.

Despite the presence of traffic calming measures, vehicles continue to ignore local speed limits, putting everyone's safety at risk. This blatant disregard for road safety norms demands urgent attention.

To address this, the installation of additional traffic lights, pedestrian crossings or speed bumps at the aforementioned junctions is critical. A review and enforcement of stricter speed control measures are essential to ensure the safety of everyone using this road.

We urge the local council and relevant authorities to not let this issue linger until another accident occurs. Implementing these changes can provide a safer environment for the Normanby community.

Sign this petition to call for immediate improvements on Flatts Lane to protect our children and community members from avoidable harm.
