First off, I want to thank everyone who has supported this petition. The more people that sign & share this petition & many others like this, will give captive, abused & neglected animals a chance for a better future. I do hope Mayor Dennis Smith takes this petition seriously & put some pressure on the Beebe family to improve the quality of welfare for ALL of their animals. This includes their reptile barn & "aquarium"/pool. The most important change would be eliminating feeding bread & providing larger enclosures with environmental enrichment. Otherwise, they should release their animals to proper sanctuaries that will provide them with those needs. Below are links to copies of the most recent USDA inspections that were sent to me by a PETA rep. She wrote: "The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) licenses animal exhibitors but, unfortunately, the laws protecting captive animals are pitifully weak. The federal Animal Welfare Act (AWA) sets forth only minimum requirements for animal care, and for the most part, only addresses husbandry issues. According to the AWA, animals must be fed, watered, and sheltered, for example, yet space requirements only mandate that the animals be able to make “normal postural changes” (i.e. allow them enough room to stand up, lie down, and turn around). There is no requirement for grass, shrubbery or other natural vegetation. Some species, including horses, ponies (including those tied up all day long), reptiles (including all those off-display), fish, birds and others, are afforded no protection." She continued: "Because the laws are so minimal, it is often difficult to attack zoos from a legal standpoint. You may find that the cages are tiny, the animals look hot and dispirited, or that the animals are displaying stereotypic behavior, but none of these conditions are specifically against the law. Even when exhibitors are consistently found non-compliant during inspections, they are typically allowed time to make 'improvements.' Because the USDA rarely revokes operators’ licenses, or even levies fines, animals continue to suffer at zoos all over the country. This outfit’s last two inspections (copies attached) found only a few non-compliances. You can see what we’re up against." This MUST change now! We need to continue to voice for the voiceless! For the captive animals, please Mayor Dennis Smith, use your influence to improve conditions at the Olympic Game Farm. This is an opportunity to set an example on how to treat other beings with the respect they deserve.
