I am a survivor of assault, and my case was dismissed after more than 18 months because it took too long to reach trial. This is not just my story, but the story of countless victims in Ontario who are left unheard due to the inefficiencies in our justice system. The lack of resources leads to delays that result in cases being dismissed or victims giving up on seeking justice.

It is estimated that over 200,000 criminal cases are pending in Ontario courts as of 2020 (source: Canadian Department of Justice). This backlog means that many victims must wait for years before their case even reaches trial. In some instances, like mine, they never do.

The impact on victims is profound – we are denied closure and justice while perpetrators walk free. It's time for change.

We need more resources allocated to our justice system so trials can happen faster. We need better support for victims navigating this complex process. We need a commitment from our government to ensure every voice is heard within a reasonable timeframe.
