Improve The Oxfordshire Countryside Accessibility For All Disabilities And Abilities

Improve The Oxfordshire Countryside Accessibility For All Disabilities And Abilities
The Issue
We urge authorities and landowners in Oxfordshire to improve the accessibility of countryside routes to accommodate all disabilities and abilities. The authorities and landowners are responsible to ensure that all accessibility maps are fit for purpose - accurate up-to-date information is critical so disabled people can trust these routes before venturing out into nature and not face disappointment. We believe that everyone should have equal opportunities regardless of their physical or cognitive capabilities.
Nature is an essential part of our lives. It provides us with peace and serenity that can be therapeutic especially for those dealing with health issues. Unfortunately, not everyone has equal access to this natural treasure due to varying abilities and disabilities which don't just include those with mobility impairments, but those with sight, hearing and cognitive impairments too.
I have spent my entire life outdoors, cherishing the beauty and tranquility of nature. However, after becoming a wheelchair user in 2023 due to a mosaic of health conditions including Asthma, Eczema, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, Osteoarthritis, and Temporal Lobe Epilepsy, I have experienced firsthand the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities in accessing our beautiful countryside. For example, not all gates and entry points are suitable for all wheelchairs.
In the UK alone there are over 13.9 million people living with a disability (Office for National Statistics). In Oxfordshire around 15% of people are disabled (Oxfordshire County Council). This significant portion of our population often faces barriers when trying to enjoy outdoor activities due to outdated or inaccurate advised accessible routes provided by the authorities and landowners.
By signing this petition you will be supporting a movement towards inclusivity in outdoor activities – ensuring every individual irrespective of their ability or disability can trustfully explore nature without fear or hesitation. Please sign this petition today!
