Improve the Joseph Road Precinct, Footscray

Improve the Joseph Road Precinct, Footscray
The issue
The safety concerns within the Joseph Road Precinct directly impact the wellbeing and safety of hundreds of residents, with the potential to affect even more individuals in the future. Currently, the absence of safe crossings and pathways poses a tangible risk to pedestrians navigating Whitehall Street, Hallenstein Street, Warde Street, Joseph Road, Neilson Place, Wightman Street, and Hopkins Street, exacerbating unsafe road conditions and insufficient pedestrian infrastructure.
The lack of safety measures poses ongoing risks for pedestrians crossing busy streets or using inadequate pathways, and some roads even lack proper pathways, forcing residents to walk on the road.
Immediate action is imperative to prevent further incidents or additional fatalities and to build a safer community for both current and future residents.
We advocate for the installation of traffic lights and pedestrian crossings at Hopkins Street and Hallenstein Street, as well as upgraded signals at Hopkins Street and Whitehall Street, and the crossing at Whitehall Street. Additionally, we seek a reduction in the speed limit on Hopkins Street and Whitehall Street. We request the establishment of pedestrian crossings (raised platform) on Joseph Road, Hallenstein Street and Warde Street.
Addressing safety issues on Whitehall Street, Hallenstein Street, Warde Street, Joseph Road, Neilson Place, Wightman Street, and Hopkins Street is pivotal for pedestrian safety.
We ask for essential infrastructure improvements, including sealed roads, safe speed limit enforcement and traffic calming measures, secure pathways, parking that does not obstruct pedestrian pathways, establishment of pram and disability-friendly pathways incorporating ramp walks for road crossings and tactile paving, and adequate lighting on every street/road. We also request disability parking, and loading zones throughout the precinct.
Our collective request encompasses the implementation of pedestrian crosswalks, the creation of safe pathways, and the enforcement of safe speed limits. These infrastructure measures are vital to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our community.
