The Issue

I am an avid dog and animal lover. It pains me to see these decisions that strip the independence and dignity away from stray dogs in India. As an Indian, it shames me that instead of addressing real societal problems, we are resorting to measures like stuffing dogs away in pounds, which neither solves the issue nor respects the lives of these innocent animals.

Recently, the Indian Supreme Court passed an order that mandates the confinement of stray dogs in pounds. This decision ignores the core issue and instead shifts the blame entirely onto the dogs, who are an integral part of our urban ecosystems. Instead of dismissing these beings as nuisances, we should focus on education and real solutions to manage and care for stray dogs humanely.

Instead of stuffing dogs into inadequate pounds, a more viable option would be to encourage mass adoption drives and the establishment of well-maintained adoption centers. There needs to be a stronger push towards educating communities on animal welfare, teaching compassion and responsibility. Infrastructures should be developed to provide basic care facilities for stray animals, ensuring they are safe, healthy, and possible candidates for adoption.

According to statistics, there are over 35 million stray dogs in India, many of whom suffer from disease, malnutrition, and human aggression. Displacing these animals into cramped pounds will not reduce their numbers nor improve their quality of life. Instead, implementing educational campaigns and supportive infrastructures can drastically foster a more ethical and effective approach to the stray dog situation.

It's time for us to wake up and take responsibility, targeting real problems with humane solutions. Sign this petition to urge the Indian Supreme Court to implement the order in tandem with ensuring adequate facilities to house the dogs which are to be removed from the cities.

I don't want stray dogs to roam the streets. I don't want them to be stuffed in pounds either. Instead, let's put them in shelters, with great amenities, proper healthcare system and the dogs's freedoms. I want them to be free and have a chance at getting adopted.Let's try to work towards a better outcome and help them relocate. They will die in those pounds. Their freedoms snatched. Together, we must work towards a better outcome.
