The Issue

I work directly with the communities in Toronto's Church-Wellesley neighborhood, where the alarming increase in homelessness has become an urgent issue. Over recent months, the Church-Wellesley community has witnessed a dramatic rise in individuals experiencing homelessness, which has overtaken public areas meant for communal use. This surge is not just numbers on a chart but real people facing extreme hardships in their daily lives.

These individuals are part of our community, yet they face heightened policing and targeting, with access to emergency services severely lacking. The temperature is dropping, and the vulnerable members of our society need immediate action to ensure their safety and well-being. It is crucial that we offer a solution that not only provides them safety but also dignity.

I urge Councillor in the Church-Wellesley area to advocate for and implement an overnight drop-in center. This center would serve as a safe space for those without a home, offering warmth, security, and access to necessary services like healthcare, mental health support, and social services. Such facilities would provide immediate relief and build bridges to long-term stability and integration back into society.

Statistics from the City of Toronto show that the number of homeless individuals has significantly increased, and the current resources fail to meet this growing need. As community members, it falls upon us to extend a hand to those who need it most. Compassion and collective effort can pave the way for sustainable solutions.

We must also allocate funds and resources intelligently, ensuring that any initiative provides measurable outcomes and improves the quality of life for those affected.

Please sign this petition to call for the immediate opening of an overnight drop-in center in the Church-Wellesley area. By doing so, you are not only offering support to those in need but are also standing up for the community’s values of inclusivity and compassion. Together, we can make a difference. Let's propel this cause to the attention of politicians and decision-makers who can effect change. Sign now and champion the creation of a safe haven for Toronto's homeless community.
