The Issue

When I first joined Mission San Jose High School as a freshman, I immediately noticed how much harder the school was compared to what I was used to. The transition was overwhelming, and my friends and I seemed to relentlessly struggle with stress from the double workload. My mental health deteriorated significantly, as the pressure from teachers, peers, and even the expectations of parents became unbearable. I found myself battling urges of self-harm and experiencing suicidal thoughts, compounded by the relentless workload and pressure. One day during class, I heard another student upset because she had an 85% in one of her classes, further emphasizing the level of stress students are facing here.

Mission San Jose High School is indeed recognized for its academic excellence, but it's imperative that we don't turn a blind eye to the mental health struggles our students face. The grading system here, with quizzes/tests constituting 70-80% of the grade, coupled with unmanageable workloads, create a breeding ground for anxiety and depression. Many students are losing sleep and proper nutrition due to the pervasive stress, leading to severe mental health issues including depression, self-harm, and even suicidal ideation.

A recent study from the American Psychological Association highlights that high school students report stress levels mirroring those observed in adults, often resulting in significant mental health challenges. It's not just about high grades; it’s about a healthy balance that ensures students' well-being. It is detrimental for students to equate their self-worth solely with academic performance, as dictated by this environment.

To address this issue, we urge the administrative staff and teachers at Mission San Jose High School to re-evaluate and adjust the current grading practices and workload assignments. Implementing more balanced grading systems and creating a supportive educational atmosphere can significantly alleviate stress, thus improving both mental health and academic performance.

Moreover, schools should also promote mental health awareness programs and provide resources such as access to counselors and mental health professionals who can support students navigating these challenges. Fostering open communication between students, parents, and school leaders can help mitigate undue pressure and cultivate a nurturing academic environment.

Join us in this crucial cause to enrich the educational experience at Mission San Jose High School without compromising the mental health of our students. Let’s reshape the approach to schooling that respects young minds and fosters healthy development. Sign this petition to call for an educational reform that aligns success with wellness at Mission San Jose High School.
