I am a resident of Barangay Pautao, Bacuag, Surigao del Norte, Philippines. Our community is a beautiful place filled with wonderful people. However, when the sun sets, our streets plunge into darkness making it difficult for us to navigate our way around. Some of us are afraid to even step outside to buy necessities at the local sari-sari store without a flashlight. This problem is particularly challenging for our elders who find it hard to navigate the roads.

The lack of adequate street lighting not only hampers our daily activities but also poses serious safety concerns. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), well-lit streets can reduce road traffic injuries by improving visibility and allowing pedestrians and drivers more time to react (WHO Global Status Report on Road Safety 2018). Moreover, well-lit streets can also discourage littering and other undesirable activities, fostering a cleaner and more pleasant environment for all residents.

We believe that installing sufficient street lights will significantly improve safety in Barangay Pautao while enhancing accessibility during nighttime hours. We urge our local government officials to take immediate action on this matter.
