The Issue

**Improve Safety with Sidewalks on Blanchard Road**

I've witnessed firsthand several near-miss safety incidents with pedestrians on Blanchard Road. Living in this area, where many families and children frequently travel to the park and school, the lack of sidewalks has become a pressing concern. The traffic on Blanchard Road is considerable, with vehicles often moving at speeds that make it hazardous for pedestrians, including students, parents with strollers, and elderly residents. It’s not just a matter of personal inconvenience; it’s a potential disaster waiting to happen.

The necessity of sidewalks on Blanchard Road cannot be overstated. Sidewalks provide a designated space for pedestrians, reducing the risk of accidents significantly. Every day, countless residents traverse this stretch without the safety that a sidewalk would afford. Adding sidewalks would improve the safety and livability of our community and show that we prioritize the well-being of our citizens. On Blanchard Road of interest to pedestrians we have the park, a school, a church, a vet office, and a nature preserve. The two intersecting roads also have sidewalks, that would link many other neighborhoods and communities.

There are ample statistics to support the effectiveness of sidewalks in enhancing pedestrian safety. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian fatalities are 75% less likely to occur on roadways with sidewalks. This critical infrastructure could dramatically reduce the potential for accidents and injuries.

Furthermore, sidewalks can also encourage healthier lifestyles by promoting walking, decrease vehicular traffic, and subsequently reduce pollution. For children heading to school, sidewalks ensure a safer and more independent commute. For seniors, it allows safe access to parks and other amenities, enhancing their quality of life.

Therefore, I urge the local government and relevant authorities to take immediate action in constructing sidewalks on Blanchard Road. This is an urgent call to protect our community and ensure safe passage for all. Please sign this petition to demand action and prioritize safety for the residents of the Blanchard Road community.

There is approximately 38 feet from the center line of the road to the property line along Blanchard Road, which seems to be sufficient right of way for sidewalk installation without property acquisition or interruption.

Given the proximity to a school and park, as well as existing pedestrian traffic and near miss incidences, I am requesting the county to evaluate this corridor for a sidewalk. The goal is to increase pedestrian safety, prevent an incident, and make the area to the park walkable to improve parking issues and constraints at Blanchard Woods Park.
