Improve safety on Bathurst Street sidewalks
The Issue
On September 4, at 5:15pm, a 37-year-old woman was tragically killed after being struck by a vehicle who mounted the curb onto the sidewalk, near the corner of Bathurst and Lonsmount. Earlier this summer, on June 17, another incident occurred just a few hundred meters north, near the corner of Bathurst and Avenal, when three people were injured, including a toddler, after a car once again mounted the curb onto the sidewalk.
There have been at least five other people seriously injured on Bathurst, between St. Clair and Eglington, since 2022. Residents of this neighborhood— which include young families, children from nearby schools, and seniors living in senior housing on Tichester Road—deserve to have their safety prioritized.
The sidewalks along this vital stretch of Bathurst must be improved to prevent further tragedies. To address this urgent issue, we need the City of Toronto to take immediate action by implementing effective safety measures.
We are calling for several critical changes: including the installation of physical barriers that separate pedestrian walkways from roadways to prevent cars from mounting the sidewalks, as well as speeding enforcement measures, widening sidewalks, and adding additional traffic lights.
Evidence from other urban centres within Canada and internationally shows that these measures can significantly enhance pedestrian safety. Studies show that cities that have implemented barriers and pedestrian-focused strategies have seen up to a 46% reduction in traffic-related pedestrian injuries and fatalities.
The residents of Toronto deserve sidewalks where they can feel secure. These proactive changes will not only save lives but also foster a community where walking is a safe, viable, and pleasant option for everyone. We urge Mayor Olivia Chow, the Toronto City Council, and local transportation agencies to prioritize this initiative and protect the people of our city.
