Improve Safety Measures in Summers Corner

The Issue

On April 14, 2025, my 11-year-old daughter, Savannah, was struck by a car traveling in the bike lane on Clay Field Trail. This devastating incident has highlighted the urgent need for safety improvements in our neighborhood. We seek the completion of the pedestrian bridge on Clay Field Trail to provide a safe and dedicated pathway for pedestrians. My child would not have been struck if she was not forced to exit the walking/ golf cart trail and enter the bike lane.

In addition, the entire Summers Corner community requires pedestrian crosswalks, signage, and lights to alert drivers of pedestrians, decreasing the potential for future accidents. Currently, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, approximately 7,500 pedestrians are killed in traffic accidents across the United States each year. Implementing these safety measures could significantly reduce these statistics locally.

We are also calling on local authorities to install a rotary at the intersection of Summers Drive and Clay Field Trail to manage traffic more efficiently and safely.

By signing this petition, we demand safer, more efficient, and pedestrian-friendly infrastructure in our neighborhood. Please sign this petition to help us advocate for necessary changes and protect lives in our community.

I have passed on the concerns directly from constituents to county staff to take up with Lennar. They are aware and working with the developer. I spoke directly with Sandra about this and have let Dorchester County staff know to address this. People are free to email me with specific concerns. Thank you.
