Petition Title: Urging the RWBY Creative Team to Address Plot Issues and Revitalize the Series

Petition Target: Viz Media and the RWBY Creative Team

Petition Text:

Dear Viz Media and the RWBY Creative Team,We are a group of dedicated RWBY fans who have cherished this American anime-style series since its debut in 2013, created by the visionary Monty Oum. With its unique fight choreography, vibrant characters, and captivating world-building, RWBY has captured the hearts of audiences worldwide. However, since Monty Oum’s tragic passing, the series’ plot, particularly from Seasons 4 to 9, has faced growing criticism and disappointment. As fans, we passionately hope that Season 10 and future content can address these issues and restore the series’ original charm. To this end, we present the following appeal:Our Concerns:Inconsistent Pacing and Lack of Coherence

Since Season 4, the pacing has been uneven, alternating between sluggish and rushed. Multiple storylines (e.g., the Atlas crisis, Salem’s invasion, and the Ever After arc) have failed to blend seamlessly, resulting in key events feeling abrupt or lacking emotional buildup. We urge for a more balanced narrative in future seasons, with a clear focus on the main storyline and meaningful side plots.

Stagnant Character Development and Marginalization

The core characters—Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang—have seen their growth arcs diminished, with their roles often overshadowed by supporting characters or antagonists. Some decisions made by these characters have felt out-of-character or illogical. We call for a renewed focus on the protagonists, giving them clear, compelling growth arcs that highlight their potential as successors to the Maidens.

Weak Antagonist Motivations and Development

The primary antagonist, Salem, and others like Cinder lack depth in their motivations and actions. Salem’s plans remain vague, and Cinder’s repetitive revenge-driven arc feels stale. We request richer backstories and motivations for antagonists to create more compelling and threatening conflicts.

Superficial Handling of Social Issues

Themes like the Faunus racial conflict, intended to mirror real-world issues, have been addressed superficially and sidelined in later seasons. We urge the team to integrate these themes more deeply and organically into the narrative, rather than treating them as mere plot devices.

Decline in Fight Choreography and Production Quality

RWBY’s hallmark has been its breathtaking fight sequences, but recent seasons have seen a decline in choreography quality compared to Monty Oum’s signature style. We hope the team can, within budget constraints, restore the fluidity and creativity of the early seasons’ action scenes.

Unresolved World-Building and Setting Overload

The expansion of the Remnant world (e.g., Maidens, Relics, Salem vs. Ozpin) has introduced numerous unresolved plot points, such as the origins of Dust or the full backstory of the Maidens. The Ever After arc in Season 9 feels disconnected from the main plot. We call for better integration of the world’s lore, addressing key mysteries to provide a cohesive story.

Our Requests:Streamline the Narrative: Ensure Season 10 and beyond have tight pacing, balancing main and side plots to maintain focus and emotional impact.

Strengthen Protagonist Focus: Re-center Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang as the heart of the story, with clear, character-driven arcs.

Deepen Antagonists and Themes: Provide complex motivations for Salem and other villains, and explore social issues like racism and classism with greater depth.

Revive Production Quality: Within resource limits, restore RWBY’s iconic fight choreography and enhance animation quality.

Honor Monty Oum’s Vision: Balance innovation with the lighthearted, action-packed spirit of the early seasons to appeal to both new and longtime fans.

Why This Matters:RWBY is not just Monty Oum’s legacy; it’s a beloved classic for countless fans. Its unique style and potential make it a gem in the animation world. However, recent plot issues have left some fans disheartened, fearing the series is losing its spark. With Viz Media’s acquisition of the RWBY IP (July 5, 2024) and the announcement of Season 10, we see hope for renewal. Through this petition, we aim to voice our concerns constructively, urging the creative team to listen to the community and work together to restore RWBY’s brilliance. We believe RWBY has the potential to remain an enduring masterpiece.
