The Issue

Whitehouse, Milton Keynes

As a parent in this community, I see children crossing this road every day after school near Watling Primary School. Recently, I witnessed a car approaching at high speed during school hours without slowing down near a commonly used crossing point. The vehicle continued straight and only slowed further ahead. In that moment, it felt genuinely unsafe.

What stood out in these so many days most was how children do react during such situations — some hesitate, some freeze, unsure how to respond to a fast-approaching vehicle. This is not a reflection of children doing something wrong, but rather a sign that the environment itself is not designed to protect them.

This is not an isolated incident. The area presents several ongoing risks:

. Limited visibility due to parked cars along the roadside
. Lack of clear school-zone signage to alert drivers
. No strong traffic calming measures to reduce speed
. No clearly defined or protected pedestrian crossing

Drivers unfamiliar with the area may not realise that this is a school route. While Whitehouse is a relatively new and developing area, road safety around schools cannot be delayed or treated as a lower priority. Basic safety infrastructure should already be in place where children are expected to cross daily.

The concern extends beyond one location. Roads surrounding local schools in the Whitehouse area, including Watling Primary School, Whitehouse Primary School and nearby routes, are increasingly busy especially during the schools hours. With growing traffic and infrastructure still developing, the risk to children, parents, and staff continues to increase.

According to the UK Department for Transport, road traffic accidents remain one of the leading causes of injury among children, with over 15,000 child casualties reported in a single year. These are not just statistics - they highlight the importance of taking preventative action before an incident occurs.

We are not asking for complex solutions — the measures required are practical, proven, and essential:

. Clear and visible “School Zone” signage on all approach roads
. Speed reduction measures and stronger awareness during school hours
. Traffic calming features such as speed bumps or raised tables
. A safe and clearly defined pedestrian crossing (e.g., zebra crossing or patrol)
. Review of parking impact on visibility near crossing areas

These improvements are standard safety practices and are essential in any area where children regularly cross roads.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a simple but urgent goal:
to create a safer environment for children and families in our community.

We urge Milton Keynes Council to prioritise this location, carry out a safety assessment, and implement appropriate measures without delay.
Taking action now can prevent a serious accident in the future.
