The Issue

Our children are our most precious treasures, and their health and comfort should always be a priority. Recently, I've noticed that St Francis Xavier School has been allowing students to play outdoors during recess, even when it is raining. As a result, many children come home soaked, cold, and visibly unhappy. Without any outdoor shelters, even the best rain gear proves inadequate over time, leaving our kids vulnerable.

Wet, cold children are at a higher risk of falling sick, which not only affects them but also impacts their families and the wider community. When children are exposed to harsh weather conditions, it not only affects their physical well-being but also their emotional state, as they often return home complaining of discomfort.

According to health guidelines supported by reputable sources like the American Academy of Pediatrics, cold and damp conditions increase the risk of illnesses, as the body's defenses are weakened by the cold. Furthermore, children’s bodies are still growing, making them more susceptible to environmental changes.

Instead of continuing this practice, St Francis Xavier School should implement a policy that considers weather conditions before allowing outdoor recess. On rainy days, alternative indoor activities should be provided to ensure that children can still enjoy their breaks without compromising their well-being.

Implementing indoor recess during inclement weather is a fair and achievable solution. Schools across the region have adopted similar policies to protect their students. They have found creative ways to utilize indoor spaces, transforming them into engaging play areas where children can interact, learn, and grow in a safe environment.

We urge St Francis Xavier School to take immediate action to address this situation by reviewing their current policies and prioritizing student health and safety. We propose the school invests in developing indoor recreation areas or temporary outdoor shelters, ensuring that no child is exposed to the elements unnecessarily.
